June 2017 NEWLETTER - EuCNC 2017

June 2017

EuCNC 2017
June 12-15, Oulu, Finland

SESAME actively participated to this year edition EuCNC, a unique opportunity for dissemination and networking in the scientific community. In order to reach its stakeholders, SESAME demos were presented in a dedicated booth.

Besides disseminating SESAME results in technical presentations, SESAME also organized a Special Session on “Designing and Developing a Cloud-enabled “Small Cell as a Service” concept, for Multi-Tenancy and Edge Services in the forthcoming 5G Framework.” SESAME also participated to the Workshop on "Business models and techno-economic analysis for 5G networks" organized by CHARISMA in collaboration with SESAME, COHERENT, VirtuWind, NORMA, 5GEx, SPEED-5G, SELFNET and mmMAGIC.

Finally, colocated with the conference, a joint SESAME-CHARISMA Summer School was organized, hosted by the University of Oulu.

June 12-15, EuCNC 2017, Oulu, Finland

At EuCNC 2017, SESAME exhibited the latest achievements of the project. Two successful demonstrations of the SESAME concepts were presented: one demo showed the concept of multi-tenancy in 5G Cloud Enabled Small Cells. The second one provided a demonstration of edge content caching in 5G Cloud Enabled Small Cells.

The demos showcased the system design, concepts and visions developed during the 5G-PPP H2020 project SESAME and focused on the main innovations introduced by SESAME:

i) the combination of 5G Small Cells with cloud technology and multitenancy;
ii) the development and demonstration the concept of Small Cells-as-a-Service (SCaaS);
iii) the computing and storage power brought at the mobile network’s edge through the development of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology (exemplified by the interconnection of micro-servers), and;
iv) a number of scenarios and use cases applying MEC.

Workshop on Business models and techno-economic analysis for 5G networks at
EuCNC 2017, 12 of June 2012, Oulou, Finland

The Workshop on "Business models and techno-economic analysis for 5G networks" was organized by CHARISMA in collaboration with SESAME, COHERENT, VirtuWind, NORMA, 5GEx, SPEED-5G, SELFNET and mmMAGICThe event focused on relevant business- and techno-economic-aspects of future 5G networks. It provided insights on the business impacts and opportunities from the deployment of 5G networks for all actors in the telecommunications ecosystem such as verticals, incumbent and new operators, service providers, application developers, content providers, regulators, equipment manufacturers etc. The potential for new roles such as brokers, aggregators and marketplaces, were also be discussed.

SESAME-CHARISMA Summer School 2017

June 12, University of Oulu, Finland

5G is foreseen as the key enabling technology that will provide high data rate communication services with low latency and will boost the development of new applications for all vertical industries. By supporting virtualization and multi-tenancy, 5G will enable the creation of new business models leading to a new ecosystem that will extend beyond the traditional telecommunication actors and stakeholders. In order for 5G to meet these ambitions, a number of challenges must be resolved.
The summer school was hosted at the University of Oulu and was co-organised from the EU funded projects CHARISMA and SESAME. It provided a series of lectures that cover thematic areas that are related to 5G networking and participants had the opportunity to interact with researchers and academics from several European Universities, Research Institutes and Industry.

Speakers present at the summer school included Prof. Maziar Nevokee (from remote, University of Sussex), Prof. Klaus Moessner (University of Surrey), Dr. Tao Chen (VTT Technical Research Centre and COHERENT project coordinator), Dr Kostas Filis  (COSMOTE), Dr. Theodoros Rokkas (inCITES Consulting), Dr Geza Koczian (University of Essex), Kai Habel (Fraunhofer-Institut ), and  Marian Ulbricht (InnoRoute).
